Treatise #1 – Concepts of Students’ Interest

In his definition of students’ interest, Dewey (1934) pointed out that educators misinterpret this concept, categorizing them as (1) “advocates of autonomy” and (2) advocates of efforts. He defined “advocates of autonomy” as those teachers who believe that students should have the freedom to choose what they learn, while “Advocates of efforts” believe tasks are never interesting; therefore, to achieve progress, a teacher must impose tasks upon students; coerce students to accomplish tasks and thus help students to develop the habits of doing so; that is, develop the habit of attending to all tasks. Dewey argued that both views were erroneous, stating that with the former students become wayward, and with the latter, students because stiff taskmasters, devoid of flexibility and creativity. In this course and/or treatise, participants will learn about the middle ground and avoid the extream stand points.
