Educators learn about CSCTL principles for various reasons and with different training focuses and/or emphasis. Administrators aim to understand proper application, while teachers learn how to connect lessons to students’ interests and enhance students’ experiences. However, for substitute teachers, CSCTL training shifts focus from delivering structured lessons to understanding how children think about learning and engagement.
Substitute Teacher
Emphasis of CSCTL training activities for substitute teachers differs because they often cover classrooms on an emergency basis and are usually unprepared to engage students, leading to mistakes that negatively affect learning. Some substitutes act as baby sitters, merely supervising without engaging students in meaningful activities and seeking help when issues arise. This lack of training results in students being emboldened to engage in negative behaviors. To help substitute teachers learn to positively engage students, we offer phases of thinking activities, teaching them to highlight and develop consistent lesson activities. CSCTL Training for Substitute Teachers
To help substitute teachers develop skills for engaging students, CSCTL training focuses on foundational elements of thinking, including (1) how students engage occurrences in their experiences (phases and/or rules of thinking), (2) what the phases of thinking activities identified by Allison (2018) and Wittgenstein (1927) as (a) perceptive, (b) analytic, (c) synthetic phases, (d) private and (e) public thinking activities are, and (2) how events or occurrences influence students thinking (how phases of thinking relate to phases of lesson). Teachers learn how these phases of thinking are consistently involved in students’ efforts.
